Chapter 13 Floating in the City of Despair
The strong smell of disinfectant goes straight into the nasal cavity, penetrates into the body and circulates in the blood.
When Ye Zhenzhen woke up, she noticed the smell of disinfectant coming out of her pores.
The person in front of her gradually became clearer. Ye Zhenzhen had a slight illusion that Wen Baijing was not as cold as he appeared to be, and he was actually quite handsome.
"Awake?" Wen Baijing's voice was calm.
Ye Zhenzhen nodded, but she still had no strength left.
Wen Baijing asked carefully:
"Do you have any family here?"
Ye Zhenzhen's eyes widened, somewhat puzzled, and her heart was beating like a drum. All the bad possibilities flashed through her mind.
A person is far away from home, without family around, and an ordinary family cannot help her. If she really gets a serious illness, should she tell her family? Will her parents sell everything they have? Will they treat her? Can she be cured?
Without telling her parents, could she handle it on her own? Could she handle it? Would she go back to her hometown and wait for death or die in a foreign land? Would her parents come to look for her? Would they be able to find her? Would they bring her ashes back to her hometown and bury her in tears?
She shook her head in panic, her fingertips digging deep into her flesh.
Wen Baijing paused, "So, where is your boyfriend?"
Ye Zhenzhen's mind was in a mess, her heart was dropping rapidly from thirty thousand feet, she bit her lower lip and shook her head again.
She stared at Wen Baijing, mustering up her courage, her hair trembling with the sound:
"I don't have a boyfriend. Am I... suffering from some... bad disease?"
Wen Baijing looked at her who was shivering slightly but pretending to be calm, his face was slightly cold, and his voice was a little icy, "What did you do during the day? How did you get heatstroke? Don't you know that heatstroke can also be life-threatening?"
Ye Zhenzhen's falling heart suddenly fell back into her chest. She took a deep breath and cried, "You almost scared me to death..."
Bai Wenjing reached out to touch her forehead, but pulled back just before he touched it. He closed his fingers awkwardly, his expression softening:
"You are afraid too. I thought you were not afraid of death."
She was immersed in the sudden rise and fall of emotions and was afraid. She hunched her shoulders and said, "I went out for a while during the day and had no appetite. Just now when I was at work, my stomach felt a little uncomfortable, so I ran to drink a glass of ice water..."
"what!"
Wen Baijing almost jumped up from his chair, his expression suddenly changed, and his voice made people feel cold.
She saw Wen Baijing's expression change rapidly and she lowered her eyelids guiltily.
Seeing her aggrieved look, Wen Baijing lost most of his temper, "You have to take care of yourself, okay?"
Ye Zhenzhen raised her eyelids and found that there seemed to be a hint of tenderness in Wen Baijing's eyes, but she did not need others to lean over and pity her, nor did she intend to jump up to touch the stars.
Floating in a helpless city, being sick always makes people fall into self-pity. Ye Zhenzhen hates herself for being so self-pitying and cowardly.
She used to love crying, and the slightest thing would make her cry. When she was heartbroken, she finally cried until her eyes were dry and her heart was more sore than her eyes.
Ye Zhenzhen couldn't help but feel a little worried, "Thank you, I haven't finished get off work yet, and I will be fined if I leave my post like this..."
Wen Baijing sighed, "Ye Zhenzhen, life is more precious than anything else."
She really wanted to say: After recovering from the illness, life must go on, and fines must be paid for any mistakes made.
In the end, they didn't say it out loud. The distance between them was like the distance between Neptune and the sun.
It was already dark outside the window, but the lights in the hospital were as bright as day. The drips from the drip bottle fell at a steady speed, splashing tiny waves.
Wen Baijing opened the takeaway box unfamiliarly and carefully. The aroma of the light seafood porridge masked the smell of disinfectant in her nose.
Only then did she realize that her stomach was pressed against her back and she couldn't help swallowing.
Wen Baijing helped her up and pointed to her right hand where she was receiving an IV drip. "Do you need my help?"
"I can use my left hand..."
Ye Zhenzhen scooped up a spoonful of porridge with her newly trained left hand and slowly brought it to her mouth.
Bai Wenjing looked at her funny movements, pursed his lips, turned his head to one side, and put his hand on his lips to suppress the urge to laugh.
Ye Zhenzhen only felt that the food was refreshing and fragrant, and her stomach felt warm. After a few bites, her stomach was full. She was reluctant to waste it, and felt distressed when she saw the leftover porridge.
"I've eaten?"
"Um,"
Wen Baijing raised his hand to her face, and she subconsciously turned her face away.
"The corner of the mouth..."
Wen Baijing reached out to wipe the porridge from her mouth. Her face was still a little warm. She lowered her head, and her loose hair slid down to cover her hot cheeks.
Wen Baijing pushed aside her dark hair and leaned over to look at her, as if teasing her on purpose: "Ye Zhenzhen, are you shy?"
Ye Zhenzhen stiffened her neck, her face full of fire, and stammered, "I didn't..."
Wen Baijing joked:
"Well, it looks much better. I have the strength to speak now."
The young nurse pushed a cart into the room to change the IV bottle and said, "Little girl, your boyfriend is so good to you!" Her words were full of envy.
Ye Zhenzhen widened her eyes and shook her head like a rattle.
Wen Baijing sat upright beside the bed, and Ye Zhenzhen's pale face gradually turned red. "You take a nap, I'll help you keep an eye on the IV." His voice was very soft, as if he was afraid of scaring away the lone wild goose on the sandbar.
Ye Zhenzhen turned her head and smiled weakly, "Thank you...Are you tired?"
Wen Baijing smiled, said nothing, and just shook his head gently.
The drops were like time, slowly flowing into Ye Zhenzhen's blood vessels and disappearing in an instant. Yet, it was so long and terrifying that she could only open her eyes wide and wait for time to pass.
"Wu Li Wu Li..."
The sound of the ambulance broke the silence, coming from far away and approaching. There were many chaotic footsteps, the doctor anxiously directing his colleagues, accompanied by heartbreaking cries, which were really shocking and made those who heard and saw it shed tears.
Listening to the noisy sound, she clutched the quilt tightly against her chest and couldn't help shivering.
Wen Baijing sat on the chair, looking at her quietly, with a hint of pity in his eyes.
It was already one o'clock in the morning when I walked out of the hospital. The round moon was hanging in the sky, casting a cold light.
Determined to be a good person to the end, Wen Baijing asked in a gentle tone: "Where do you live? I'll take you back."
Ye Zhenzhen didn't want to trouble him anymore. She looked away and smiled faintly, "Thank you. If it's convenient, just take me back to the company building."
Wen Baijing was puzzled: "You just came out of the hospital, and you want to go back to the company?"
It was already very late, and at this time, even in the night club with reversed day and night, most of the customers had left one after another.
Seeing that he didn't understand, Ye Zhenzhen explained: "My bag and keys are still in the company locker..."
After Wen Baijing sent her downstairs to the company, he tapped the steering wheel with his fingers, turned his face sideways and said softly: "Come down when you get the key, I'll take you home."
There wasn't a hint of ill intention in that tone.
Ye Zhenzhen smiled faintly and said, "Thank you for your kindness, I appreciate it. I'm really sorry to bother you today. Please don't worry, I'm much better now and can go home by myself."
Be tactful and polite.
Many roads can only be walked by yourself. She can no longer easily think of relying on others.
Wen Baijing's eyes flashed with pity, "Why are you so stubborn?"
Ye Zhenzhen pursed her lips and declined politely: "It's too late, we're not on the same route, you should go home and rest early."
Wen Baijing was surprised: "How do you know we are not going this way?"
Ye Zhenzhen raised the corner of her mouth slightly: "Even if we are on the way today, it won't be on the way in the future."
It is not difficult to understand the double meaning in her words.
Wen Baijing's eyes gradually dimmed, but in the end he did not insist.
Ye Zhenzhen rode on her electric scooter and rushed to the small attic under the starlight.
Along the way, everything was silent and the world was extremely empty.
She opened the iron door of the small attic and put aside all her fatigue. This was her harbor where she could rest for a while.
There are many missed calls on the phone, all from the same person. The nicknames are transformed back into symbols after rotation, just like a piece of candy in your mouth rolling on broken glass, the sugar has long melted but the wound is still bleeding.
When her ex saw that she didn’t answer the call, he sent her a WeChat message again without giving up.
[Zhenzhen, are you okay? ]
She tried to reply, typed a lot of words and finally deleted it.
Wen Baijing’s information popped up.
[Ye Zhenzhen, are you home yet? ]
She raised her hand to wipe the sweat from her forehead and replied after careful consideration.
[I'm home now. Thank you for your help. Good night.]
Ye Zhenzhen stood up and stood by the window, holding her cell phone out.
Walking into the cramped bathroom, hot water poured down from above my head. My face was wet, and I couldn't tell whether it was the hot water or my tears. I wiped the mist off the mirror and saw the girl in the mirror with bloodshot eyes and a touch of vermilion on her nose.
Ye Zhenzhen felt grateful for having survived a calamity. She always felt that death was a very distant thing in the past, but after brushing shoulders with death today, she realized that life and death are only a matter of a moment.
